MESSAGE FOR THE CHURCH (4:1-22:21)

MESSAGE FOR THE CHURCH

(4:1-22:21)

Moving from the conditions within the churches in Asia to the future of the universal church, John sees the        course of coming events in a way similar to Daniel and Ezekiel. Many of these passages contain clear                 spiritual teachings, but others seem beyond our ability to understand. The clear teaching of this book is that         God will defeat all evil in the end. We must live in obedience to Jesus Christ, the coming Conqueror and Judge.

  • Worshiping God in heaven

    The glorious throne

Chapters 4 and 5 record glimpses into Christ's glory. Here we see into the throne room of heaven. God is on the throne and orchestrating all the events that John will record. The world is not spinning out of control; the God of creation will carry out his plans as Christ initiates the final battle with the forces of evil. John shows us heaven before showing us earth so that we will not be frightened by future events.

The Throne in Heaven

REV 4:1 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, "Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this."

  • After these things;

After the letters were written to the seven churches.

  • I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven.

After John had finished the task of writing to the seven churches he looked and saw a door standing open in heaven.

  1. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, first voice;  implying that there would be others to follow.
  • come up here,
  1. John was translated in the Sprit from the Isle of Patmos to heaven.
  1. and I will show you things which must take place after this."

Four times in the book of Revelation John says he was "in the Spirit" (1:10; 4:2; 17:3; 21:10). This expression means that the Holy Spirit was giving him a vision--showing him situations and events he could not have seen with mere human eyesight. All true prophecy comes from God through the Holy Spirit (2Pe 1:20, 21).

2 Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.

3  And He who sat there was like a jasper and a Sardis stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.

4:1-3. Just as the book of Revelation opens with a reference to the throne of God, and the letter to the last of the seven churches closes with a reference to the throne of Christ, so here the first great prophetic vision begins with the statement, there was a throne set in heaven (see Dan 7:9). A throne is the symbol of government and power. John attempts to record a vision of God similar to that beheld by Moses (Exo 19:9,19), by Isaiah (6:5), and by Ezekiel (1:26-28). The seer likens what he saw to three stones: the jasper, a transparent stone like glass or rock crystal; the sardius, red in color; and the emerald, green. In the breastplate of the high priest the first and last stones were sardius and jasper (Exo 28:17,20). It has been suggested that these stones stand for holiness, wrath, and mercy. Around the throne was a rainbow, which speaks of grace, or, as Hengstenberg says, "of grace returning after wrath."

4  Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads.

4:4
Who are these 24 elders? Because there were 12 tribes of Israel in the Old Testament and 12 apostles in the New Testament, the 24 elders in this vision probably represent all the redeemed of God for all time (both before and after Christ's death and resurrection). They symbolize all those--both Jews and Gentiles--who are now part of God's family. The 24 elders show us that all the redeemed of the Lord are worshiping him.

5  And from the throne proceeded lightning’s, thundering, and voices. And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

4:5
In Revelation, lightning and thunder are connected with significant events in heaven. They remind us of the lightning and thunder at Mount Sinai when God gave the people his laws (Exo 19:16). The Old Testament often uses such imagery to reflect God's power and majesty (Psa 77:18). The "seven spirits of God" is another name for the Holy Spirit. See also Zec 4:2-6, where the seven lamps are equated with the one Spirit.

6  Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back.

7  The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle.

4:6, 7
Glass was very rare in New Testament times, and crystal-clear glass was virtually impossible to find (see 1Co 13:12). The "sea of glass" highlights both the magnificence and holiness of God. Just as the Holy Spirit is seen symbolically in the seven lighted lamps, so the "four living creatures" represent the attributes (the qualities and character) of God. These creatures were not real animals. Like the cherubim (the highest order of the angels), they guard God's throne, lead others in worship, and proclaim God's holiness. God's attributes symbolized in the animal-like appearance of these four creatures are majesty and power (the lion), faithfulness (the ox), intelligence (the man), and sovereignty (the eagle). The Old Testament prophet Ezekiel saw four similar creatures in one of his visions (Eze 1:5-10).

8  And the four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!"

9  Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever,

10  the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:

11   "You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created."

8-11. With the introduction of the four living creatures, we have the first of twenty hymns, as they might be called, sung by various heavenly groups throughout the book of Revelation. Five of them are in these two chapters prefacing the opening of the seals. The first two are hymns to God: one sung by the living creatures ascribing holiness to God (4:8) and the other by the twenty-four elders acknowledging God as Creator. The opening words of the first hymn remind us of Isa 6:3, technically known in ancient hymnology as the Trisagion. The third and fourth are hymns to the Lamb, sung by the two groups just mentioned, acknowledging that the Lamb is worthy to open the book (Rev 5:9,10; 5:11,12). The fifth hymn is sung to both God and the Lamb by "every created thing in heaven, on the earth, and under the earth" (v. 13), and ascribes to them blessing, honor, glory, and dominion.

Ezekiel in Babylon

Supporting Scripture

EZE 1:1  Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the River Chebar, that the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.

2  On the fifth day of the month, which was in the fifth year of King Jehoiachin's captivity,

3  the word of the LORD came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the River Chebar; and the hand of the LORD was upon him there.

The Glory of the LORD

EZE 1:4  Then I looked, and behold, a whirlwind was coming out of the north, a great cloud with raging fire engulfing itself; and brightness was all around it and radiating out of its midst like the color of amber, out of the midst of the fire.

5  Also from within it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had the likeness of a man.

6  Each one had four faces, and each one had four wings.

7  Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the soles of calves' feet. They sparkled like the color of burnished bronze.

8  They had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and each of the four had faces and wings.

9  Their wings touched one another. The creatures did not turn when they went, but each one went straight forward.

10  As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man, each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, each of the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and each of the four had the face of an eagle.

11  Thus were their faces. Their wings were stretched upward; two wings of each one touched one another, and two covered their bodies.

12  And each one went straight forward; they went wherever the spirit wanted to go, and they did not turn when they went.

13  As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of torches. Fire was going back and forth among the living creatures; the fire was bright, and out of the fire went lightning.

14  And the living creatures ran back and forth, in appearance like a flash of lightning.

15  Now as I looked at the living creatures, behold, a wheel was on the earth beside each living creature with its four faces.

16  The appearance of the wheels and their works was like the color of beryl, and all four had the same likeness. The appearance of their works was, as it were, a wheel in the middle of a wheel.

17  When they went, they went toward any one of four directions; they did not turn aside when they went.

18  As for their rims, they were so high they were awesome; and their rims were full of eyes, all around the four of them.

19  When the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them; and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.

20  Wherever the spirit wanted to go, they went, because there the spirit went; and the wheels were lifted together with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

:21  When those went, these went; when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up together with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

22  The likeness of the firmament above the heads of the living creatures was like the color of an awesome crystal, stretched out over their heads.

23  And under the firmament their wings spread out straight, one toward another. Each one had two which covered one side, and each one had two which covered the other side of the body.

24  When they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of many waters, like the voice of the Almighty, a tumult like the noise of an army; and when they stood still, they let down their wings.

25  A voice came from above the firmament that was over their heads; whenever they stood, they let down their wings.

26  And above the firmament over their heads was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like a sapphire stone; on the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man high above it.

27  Also from the appearance of His waist and upward I saw, as it were, the color of amber with the appearance of fire all around within it; and from the appearance of His waist and downward I saw, as it were, the appearance of fire with brightness all around.

28  Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the brightness all around it. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. So when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard a voice of One speaking.
